Our Subjects!
Reading
Reading is a big part in Kindergarten! We learn about syllables, rhyming, initial (beginning) sounds, and final sounds in words. We also learn how to blend sounds to make words. We read many stories and talk about sequence, retelling, real and fantasy, compare and contrast, main idea, and more. We practice sight words every week and begin to read!
Writing
Writing is also a big part in Kindergarten! We learn basic structures of letters (vertical and horizontal lines, curved lines, and slanted lines) and the correct ways to write letters. We know all the letters in our name and can write it. We also focus on the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. We learn about sentence structure (uppercase first letter and punctuation) and learn how to write sentences!
Religion
In Religion, we learn about the Story of Creation and how God gives us many gifts. We begin to learn about Jesus and what He teaches us. We learn about ways we can share God's love and be kind to one another. We talk about Thanksgiving, Christmas, Lent, Easter, The Epiphany, our classroom Saint (Saint Lucia), and cover all religious holidays.
Math
In Math, we learn how to write numbers in word and numerical form. We work on one to one correspondence, comparing, matching, and simple adding and subtracting. We learn how to count to 100 by one's and ten's! We also will learn basic geometry and talk about two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes!
Science/Social Studies
In Science, we do basic experiments and observations (sink or float, five senses, etc.). We investigate parts of things depending on the season (apples, pumpkins, leaves) and take nature walks. We track the weather on our graph every day! In Social Studies, we learn about cooperation and feelings, community helpers, the American Flag and parades, maps and directions, and more.
